Book Club Details

This February 2024, the Spiritual Leadership Committee of the Health Ministries Association is hosting a Virtual Spiritual Book Journal Club beginning on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, 7:00 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. ET (6:00 p.m. CT, 5:00 p.m. MT, 4:00 p.m. Pacific Time) via Zoom invitation only.

This activity is offered on eight (8) consecutive Tuesdays in February and March. It is facilitated by two professional group facilitators and faith community nurses, Amy Armanious and Ann Gornik.

The book is titled The Cup of Our Life: A Guide to Spiritual Growth by Joyce Rupp. The intention is each participant will use the book for daily prayer and spiritual reading (averaging 15 minutes). The group will gather virtually on Tuesdays for shared conversation and discussion. The gathering provides time for self-reflection, learning, and fellowship opportunities to individuals who are interested in spiritual care and spiritual health. Attendees learn from the group facilitators and each other as they enhance their knowledge of self, Creator, and others especially for people in need throughout our communities. There is no cost for this offering.

The book discussion is open to HMA members of all faith traditions and spiritual orientation. We will learn about spiritual listening and how to encourage one another’s spiritual health through presence. Our sharing time is not for life problem-solving, but for promoting whole-person health which is balancing body, mind & spirit.

Each participant is encouraged to purchase the book before the first session on February 6th. Here is the link https://rb.gy/y2486 and the ISBN-13: 978-1-933495-31-6 Regular reading and being prepared before each group session are strongly encouraged. Participants do not need to be present for each session. We encourage participants to attend all eight (8) sessions as sacred time for self -care.

For the first session, participants are asked to bring either a coffee mug or teacup of their choice and their book.

Please come and share your spiritual journey with us. For questions, contact Ann Gornik, Director of the HMA Spiritual Leadership at gornik.ann@gmail.com

About The Author

Joyce Rupp is a well-known author, conference speaker, spiritual guide, and retreat leader. Over the years, she has become a favorite author for many readers.

Joyce takes familiar objects in our everyday lives (i.e., a cup), and makes meaning as related to our spiritual lives. She is the author of several books, with The Cup of Our Life as one of her renowned writings. She is a member of the Servite (Servants of Mary) community in West Des Moines, Iowa.

This book, The Cup of Our Life was first published in 1997 and is still a book that many people, both men and women, connect with and read over again in later years. Joyce’s symbolism with a ‘cup’ is intriguing since this everyday image is not something heart-stopping. How can the author take a ‘cup’ and expound on it to the point that readers could find the potential for spiritual growth? Well, Joyce does. She looks at the shape, size, texture, color, and usefulness of the ‘cup.’ She helps her readers dig deeper into their very soul for personal transformation with their Creator nearby. Joyce asks her readers to choose cups to use for their prayer journeys. Readers are encouraged to reflect on the spiritual meaning of ‘cups’ in our daily lives.

This book is designed to be used for both individual reading and for group book discussions.
